There Are 44 Planets Like Earth in the Milky Way

Credit: NASAA new machine learning model has predicted that other star systems in our galaxy contain 44 planets that have the same characteristics as Earth, meaning they could be habitable. Scientists say the prediction is 99% accurate, reports Forbes.

Scientists have created a new machine-learning AI algorithm that identifies star systems that could host planets like ours. The new machine-learning model could revolutionize the search for habitable planets outside our solar system.

Such planets are rocky, like Earth, have similar sizes, and other characteristics necessary to support life. In particular, such planets are in the habitable zone of their star, which means that liquid water can exist on its surface.

It is on such planets that extraterrestrial life is most likely to be discovered, scientists believe.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been trained using data to recognize certain types of planets so that it can make the most accurate predictions possible.

The new machine learning model is based on a unique new algorithm designed to recognize and classify star systems that contain Earth-like planets.

As a result, the AI was able to predict that there are 44 star systems in our Milky Way galaxy that contain at least one Earth-like planet. Scientists say the prediction is 99% accurate.

“The results are impressive: the algorithm achieves precision values of up to 0.99, which means that 99% of the systems identified by the machine-learning model have at least one Earth-like planet,” said Jeanne Davoult, an astronomer at the German Aerospace Agency DLR, in a statement.

Further study confirmed the theoretical possibility that these star systems could contain an Earth-like planet.

Scientists say it is one of the few machine learning models in the world with such a level of complexity and depth that it can predict the existence of previously unknown planets that are suitable for life.

The authors of the study believe that the new model will reduce the time needed to study star systems that potentially have Earth-like planets.

This way, astronomers will be able to point their telescopes at specific parts of our galaxy, which will allow them to detect potentially habitable planets.
