The UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is set to conduct a groundbreaking experiment: beginning mid-next year, patients in two London wards will be able to discover their estimated life expectancy.
The tool behind this innovation, known as AIRE (AI-ECG Risk Estimator), uses a standard electrocardiogram to predict a person’s risk of death within the next 10 years, achieving an accuracy rate of 78%.

This allows the algorithm to not only assess current heart disease risk but also anticipate conditions like heart failure and arrhythmia long before they develop clinically.
Dr Arunashis Sau, from Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and a lead investigator in the study, explained that AIRE aims to serve as a “superhuman” assistant for doctors, enhancing rather than replacing medical expertise. Sau noted that AI could help doctors catch subtle indicators that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The trial will initially involve hundreds of patients, with plans to expand participation over time. If successful, AIRE could become a routine part of NHS care within five years.
The study has shown promising results, with AIRE accurately predicting heart failure risk in nearly 80% of cases, offering hope that this tool could transform cardiology and save thousands of lives.
This AI-driven initiative could mark a significant step toward a future where technology prevents disease before symptoms emerge.
