Man Recalls ‘Wonderful’ Near-Death Experience During Cardiac Arrest

Recent studies have begun to explore what occurs at the moment of death, particularly through near-death experiences (NDEs). Some individuals, like 85-year-old Dave Singleton from Nottingham, claim to have glimpsed the afterlife during cardiac arrest.

Dave’s NDE occurred over 20 years ago, just before his 65th birthday, while he was suffering from heart block, a condition causing abnormal heart rhythms.

After feeling faint at home, his neighbor, a retired doctor, called an ambulance when his pulse dropped dangerously low.

“My heart had almost stopped beating so, like in medical dramas, I was wired up to several machines on a trolley and, surrounded by medical staff, raced through the hospital to the coronary care ward,” Dave recalled.

“I was transferred to the bed and immediately the sirens sounded as my heart stopped. For me, it appeared that the lights drew dimmer like a curtain was closing but, almost immediately, I was resuscitated using the paddles.”

Dave’s heart stopped multiple times, requiring repeated resuscitation, which he described as feeling “like I had been pummeled by a heavy-weight boxer.” During one episode, he experienced a vision of a “wonderful place.”

“I was sitting in a beautiful garden in the warm sunshine. There was a high hedge behind me and I could hear voices and laughter from the other side of the hedge. I knew that it was family and friends gathered there so it must have been a special event,” he said.

“I knew that all I had to do was stand and walk round the hedge to join them. However, I stayed where I was because I was so comfortable and the view across the fields to the rolling hills in the distance was magnificent. I was so calm and peaceful and in a wonderful place. I was happy and contented.”

This serene moment ended abruptly when medics revived him.

“Wham, bang. I was back,” Dave explained. “I opened my eyes to see a group of busy medical staff around me keeping me alive. To be honest, I didn’t want to come back as it was most uncomfortable and noisy.”

Dave was in cardiac arrest for about eight minutes before being fitted with a pacemaker, a device he has since relied on to regulate his heartbeat.

Research into NDEs suggests that 10 to 20 percent of resuscitated individuals report vivid experiences, from otherworldly visions to out-of-body sensations. Studies explore these phenomena from biological, spiritual, and parapsychological perspectives, though no conclusive answers exist.

In 2015, neurology professor Jimo Borjigin observed a “surge of activity” in a patient’s brain during cardiac arrest, with areas linked to consciousness and memory communicating intensely.
