Did Life Exist on Venus: Scientists Have Found a Way to Find Out

Space exploration, including sending probes, rovers, and landers to Mars, requires significant resources and effort. However, humanity’s primary motivation is to try to uncover the secrets of the entire solar system, especially in the search for life beyond Earth.

The idea that our planet may be the only one habitable worries scientists and spurred further exploration.

While much of the attention is currently focused on Mars and its icy moons, Venus, despite its harsh atmosphere, is also of interest to scientists.

Similar in size and composition to Earth, it is in the habitable zone, although its climate is very different from ours. While Earth has habitable conditions, Venus has a strong greenhouse effect.

Exploring Venus could provide valuable insight into how rocky planets with similar characteristics might evolve differently. As ScienceAlert reports, a new equation reminiscent of the Drake equation was presented at the recent 2025 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference that estimates the likelihood of life on Venus and its connections to other planets.

The presentation, by Diana Gentry of NASA’s Ames Aerobiology Laboratory, is titled “Probability of Life on Other Planets: The Venus Life Equation and Unknowns on Other Worlds.” The Venus Life Equation (VLE) provides a conceptual approach to estimating the odds of life based on observations and modeling.

The VLE includes three key parameters: the probability of life, the stability of the biosphere, and the continuity of conditions favorable to life. The equation is as follows: L=OxRxC, where L is the probability of life, O is the probability of its emergence, R is the stability of the biosphere, and C is the continuity of favorable conditions.

Research shows that Venus may have had conditions suitable for life in the past. At a certain time, its surface may have been washed with water, which created favorable conditions for the origin of life. This coincides with the eras on Earth when the first life arose.

Interestingly, at an altitude of about 50 km above the surface of Venus, conditions may be comfortable enough for the existence of simple life forms. However, assessing the probability of life on Venus remains a difficult task, since many parameters are difficult to quantify.

Research shows that life on Earth has been able to adapt to different conditions and survive several mass extinctions. This high resilience (R) value explains why life exists on Earth. Whereas on Venus the situation may have been different and its biosphere was probably less resilient.

The continuity factor also plays an important role in assessing the probability of life. It depends on the stability of the star and the planet’s orbit, as well as on geological activity.

Some aspects, such as biogenic instability, are difficult to study, but are important for understanding the conditions under which life can exist.
