Abduction of Paulo Coutinho: ‘They Want to Know How Life Began’

On the night of June 23, 1976, in the urban neighborhood of Aricanduva, São Paulo, Brazil, 18-year-old Paulo Coutinho experienced an extraordinary event that would forever alter his life.

Around 11:45 PM, after leaving a night school class, Paulo encountered a phenomenon that defies conventional explanation—a sighting and subsequent abduction by entities described as “very short” beings with unusual physical characteristics.

The incident unfolded beneath the shadowy skies of the city, where Paulo first observed a luminous object in motion. The craft, described as a massive reddish-gray cigar-shaped structure, measured approximately 650 feet in length. From this object emerged a humanoid figure with a large head, pointed ears, and an upturned nose “like a pig’s,” dressed in a tight, bluish-gray suit marked with a chest emblem.

What began as a simple walk home turned into a Close Encounter of the Fourth Kind (CE-IV), as Paulo was taken aboard the craft and subjected to a series of bewildering experiences.

Paulo Coutinho, 18, failed to return home after attending a night school class. The next morning, a friend brought Paulo’s schoolbooks and notebooks to his parents, saying he had found them scattered on the street around midnight.

Despite police inquiries, Paulo could not be located. By evening, many people had gathered at the Coutinho home.

Suddenly, the boy’s father, Jose Alves, felt a strong conviction that his son was safe and would return, as well as an urge to check the back of the garden for signs of him. However, he did not act on this feeling immediately, instead choosing to reassure the family.

Moments later, groans were heard, and upon opening the back garden door, Paulo was discovered lying on the steps, semi-conscious and cold, as though he had been there for some time. He was later revived at a nearby hospital.

The police officer who carried him to the ambulance reported feeling an unusual irritation on his body, especially his arms.

Additionally, ballpoint pens in Paulo’s pockets were found to be highly radioactive. At approximately 7:30 that evening, a neighbor, Virginia, observed a strange luminous object hovering near the Coutinho house roof before it moved away. Her daughter also witnessed the event.

According to Paulo, he intermittently heard a mysterious whistling sound throughout the day of December 23rd. After leaving his class at 11:30 PM, he escorted his girlfriend home and then noticed a moving light in the sky, which he quickly realized was not an airplane.

He felt a sudden shudder and became paralyzed, unable to cry out. The light descended and stopped 20–25 feet away before slowly dimming.

A “very short” being emerged with a large head, pointed ears, small mouth, and an upturned, pig-like nose. Bald and eyebrow-less, it wore a bluish-gray one-piece suit with an emblem on its chest.

Paulo described being levitated alongside the being, eventually approaching a massive reddish cigar-shaped object, which transitioned to metallic gray as they drew near.

Overwhelmed with vertigo, Paulo passed through a horizontal door into the craft and found himself in a dark gray, circular room. Three beings stood watching him.

After attempting to rise to his knees, he felt paralyzed again and received a telepathic message assuring him he would not be harmed. The beings turned and moved toward a wall, which vanished to reveal a larger room containing six additional beings.

This second room was stark, with no visible light source or furniture. Paulo sat on the floor facing a sidewall, where moving images of his girlfriend, school friends, and parents appeared, seemingly reflecting their real-time actions. He demanded to know what they wanted. Telepathically, they explained they sought to understand how life arose in the universe.

When Paulo asked about the three “different” beings, he learned they were females. Their society, he was told, had no sexual reproduction; children were produced in laboratories for specific societal roles. When Paulo requested to return home, one being touched a wall projection and looked at a female. A corridor with red lighting appeared.

Compelled to walk, Paulo entered the corridor and encountered a bed-like structure emerging from the wall. Lying down, he was illuminated by one being’s touch. Shortly after, he experienced dizziness and was ejected from the craft, regaining consciousness on the garden steps, where he could hear his parents talking.

Upon awakening in the hospital, Paulo felt numbness and prickling across his entire body.

The encounter, documented by Mario Martins Ribeiro for Apex, has since been classified as a significant case in ufology due to its vivid details and the physical evidence left behind, including radioactive materials.
